You’ve turned the heating up again. The living room’s warm enough, but the hallway’s freezing, the back bedroom never quite gets there, and your feet are cold no matter how many pairs of socks you put on. Sound familiar? If your heating bills keep climbing but the house never actually feels warm, the problem usually isn’t your boiler. It’s the gaps.
Cold Spots Are a Symptom, Not a Mystery
Every house loses heat somewhere. The question is where, and how much. A well-insulated home loses heat slowly and evenly, so the whole space warms up together. A poorly insulated one loses heat fast through specific weak points, and those weak points become the cold spots you notice — the draughty landing, the chilly kitchen floor, the bedroom above the garage that’s always a few degrees off.
Heat takes the path of least resistance. If your loft insulation is thin, patchy, or has been disturbed by old pipework and cable runs, warm air rises straight through it and out of the roof. If your cavity walls were never filled, or filled badly decades ago, heat pushes straight through the brickwork. Suspended timber floors with no underfloor insulation act almost like an open window at ankle height.
The Loft Is Usually the Biggest Culprit
Heat rises, so an under-insulated loft is often the single biggest source of heat loss in a home. Building regs now call for around 270mm of loft insulation, but plenty of homes across Lancashire and Cumbria are still sitting at 100mm or less — either because it was never topped up, or because it’s been squashed flat, damp, or shifted out of place over the years.
We see this constantly on jobs around Preston and Lancaster: homeowners assume they’ve got insulation because there’s something up there, without realising it’s nowhere near thick enough to do the job properly. A quick loft check often explains a lot.
Cavity Walls: Filled, Unfilled, or Failed
Homes built from the 1920s onwards typically have a cavity wall — two layers of brick with a gap in between. That gap should be filled with insulation. If it isn’t, or if the fill has degraded or was installed poorly by someone else years ago, heat moves straight through the wall.
You can sometimes tell just by touch. Run your hand over an internal wall on a cold day — if it feels noticeably cold compared to an insulated wall elsewhere in the house, that’s worth investigating. Cavity wall insulation is one of the most cost-effective upgrades you can make, and it makes a genuine difference to how a room feels, not just what the thermostat reads.
Don’t Forget What’s Under Your Feet
Underfloor insulation gets overlooked constantly, and it shouldn’t. If you’ve got a suspended timber ground floor — common in older properties across the Fylde Coast and the Ribble Valley — there’s often a ventilated void underneath the boards that lets cold air circulate freely beneath your living room.
Fit underfloor insulation between the joists and that cold air stops undermining the room above. Combined with loft and cavity wall work, it closes off one of the last big gaps in the fabric of the house.
Old Insulation Can Cause Its Own Problems
It’s not just about missing insulation. Old, degraded, or poorly fitted insulation can create cold spots too, sitting in the wrong place, compressed, or damp enough that it’s stopped working properly. This is where loft insulation removal comes in — sometimes the right move isn’t topping up what’s there, it’s taking it out and starting fresh, particularly if there’s been a pest problem, water damage, or contamination.
We come across this a lot in older housing stock around Barrow-in-Furness and Kendal, where insulation installed thirty or forty years ago has simply reached the end of its useful life. Trying to top up on top of it rarely gives the result you’re after.
Older Homes Behave Differently
Victorian and Edwardian terraces, and solid-wall properties more generally, don’t always fit the standard cavity wall approach, since many were built without a cavity at all. These homes need a different strategy, and it’s worth getting proper advice rather than assuming every house takes the same fix. What works on a 1980s semi in Bolton won’t necessarily suit a stone terrace in Clitheroe.
Getting a Proper Assessment
The honest answer to “why is my house hard to heat” is almost always some combination of loft, wall, and floor insulation working below the level it should. Chasing symptoms — turning the thermostat up, buying draught excluders, running a dehumidifier — treats the effect, not the cause.
