There’s a particular kind of cold that comes from below — the sort that creeps up through a bare floorboard on a February morning and doesn’t seem to care how high you’ve got the thermostat. If you live in an older property with suspended timber floors, chances are underfloor insulation is something you’ve either never considered or been unsure whether it’s even possible.
The good news is that it’s more achievable than most people think, and it makes a more noticeable difference to everyday comfort than almost any other single insulation measure.
Why older homes lose so much heat through the floor
Properties built before the 1960s — and there are plenty of those across Preston, Lancaster, Kendal, Penrith and throughout the older mill and market towns of Lancashire and Cumbria — typically have what’s called a suspended timber ground floor. Rather than a solid concrete slab, the floor is made up of floorboards laid over timber joists, with an air gap beneath (called the sub-floor void) that connects to the outside air through small ventilation bricks in the external walls.
That ventilation is important — it prevents the timber from rotting by keeping air moving underneath. But it also means cold outside air is circulating directly beneath your living room floor all winter. Without any insulation between the joists, that cold transfers straight through the floorboards and into the room.
How underfloor insulation is installed
The most common approach for suspended floors is to fit rigid insulation boards or mineral wool between the joists, held in place either with netting, timber battens or a friction fit. Depending on the property, this can sometimes be done from above — by lifting sections of floorboard — or from below, through the sub-floor void, if access allows.
Access from below via an external airbrick opening is possible in some properties, but most installations involve lifting a manageable number of boards from above. Fylde Insulation will assess which method is practical for your home.
Where floorboards are to be lifted, it’s important that any work is done carefully to preserve the boards for relaying, and that the underfloor ventilation isn’t compromised. Blocking up those airbricks entirely would cause the timber to deteriorate — which defeats the purpose entirely. Good underfloor insulation fills the space between joists while leaving the ventilation path intact.
The comfort difference
People who’ve had underfloor insulation fitted often say it’s the most immediately noticeable insulation improvement they’ve made to their home. Loft insulation reduces heat loss upwards, which matters enormously over the course of a heating season. But cold floors are something you feel directly, in real time, every time you’re in the room. Reducing that floor cold-bridge makes rooms feel warmer at a given thermostat temperature — which means the heating doesn’t need to work quite as hard to maintain comfort.
It’s particularly relevant in rooms where people spend a lot of time at ground level — sitting rooms, kitchens, playrooms — and in homes with older single-glazed windows and less-than-perfect draughtproofing where cold air infiltration is already a factor.
Is it suitable for every property?
Underfloor insulation for suspended timber floors works well in most pre-1960s properties across the region. Properties with solid concrete floors don’t have the same option for retrofit underfloor insulation in the traditional sense, though there are options involving insulated overlays if floor height allows.
The condition of the existing sub-floor void matters too. If there are signs of past damp, evidence of rot in the joists, or existing airbrick blockages causing moisture problems, those need addressing before insulation goes in. A survey will identify any issues before work begins.
Combining underfloor insulation with other measures
Underfloor insulation works best as part of a broader package. If you’ve already insulated your loft and topped up cavity walls but the ground floor still feels cold, underfloor insulation is often the logical next step.
